So a little less than a year ago I posted this post and also sent out some emails to folks with the same content. I invited folks (yeah you) to join me in two creative endeavors, making Hypertufa containers for gardening, and also Dying yarn (for whatever pervy things you do with yarn).
I got a few responses, and then completely dropped the ball, apparently incapable of wedging anymore things into the 2007 calendar. This year I REALLY would like to do both of them, and as always, prefer to do these kinds of things WITH my friends. So this year I am looking at the calendar early and going to try to get them scheduled early before the calendar fills up. I have a bit more experience with the yarn dyeing wince I wrote the old post, and certainly think we can do hot pour and hand-paint and kettle dying, mostly time being our limiting factor.
For both of these events I am thinking I would ask everyone to kick in some dollar amount (determined by how many people come and how much people want to do) to cover most of the material costs.
So below the cut is a copy of the description of both of these ideas, and then afterwards is a poll to tell me if you are interested and which dates are good for you.
So I have 2 upcoming project things that I think would be cool to do
with a group. One is making Hypertufa planters, the other is fiber/yarn
dyeing. Both of these things are "outside" events where we won't wreck
my house making a mess.
Hypertufa:
If you aren't familiar Hypertufa is "an artificial stone made from
various aggregates bonded together using Portland cement." Some of the
"various aggregates" include peat, perlite, coir, sand, vermiculite,
nylon fiber mesh. Hypertufa makes a very sturdy and lightweight
container/planter that can be any shape you'd like (within reason) and
made to look like natural quarried stone. I was thinking that between the folks who say yes,
we could probably find most of the tools we'll need and everyone can chip in some for the materials.

I have never done this before, but I think it sounds interesting to try.
Fiber/yarn dying:
A little more self-explanatory. I have a camp propane stove than can
take fairly large pots. I have a few large pots, and 2 reasonable size
"steamer pots". There are quite a few places to buy "bare" yarn, I'll
link some below. I figured everyone who is coming can pitch in for some
dye and a few other supplies that we'll need like gloves and soap.
The dyes I am looking at work on silk, nylon and wool. I have done a
little fiber-dyeing and a little yarn dyeing. And I have a book and some
online resources with ideas. I was thinking maybe some yarn painting and
if we can agree on a color or two maybe trying kettle dyeing.
